These incredibly powerful Kekkei Genkai from Naruto have seemingly vanished without a trace in the era of Boruto.
The Naruto series introduced numerous Kekkei Genkai with terrifying abilities, but not all of them have had the chance to reappear in the sequel, Boruto. Some belonged to clans that were wiped out, while others were tied to characters from filler arcs or novel-based storylines that Boruto rarely references. As the newer series focuses on entirely different threats and power systems, these forgotten abilities have been left with little room to shine.
5. The Iburi Clan’s Ability to Transform Into Smoke

Imagine facing a shinobi whose body allows attacks to pass straight through it. That is the nightmare of fighting the Iburi clan, whose members can transform themselves into smoke to evade conventional attacks. Featured in the Kakashi’s Anbu arc of Naruto Shippuden, this Kekkei Genkai provides an extremely versatile advantage that few opponents can counter in time.
Offensively, members of the clan can enter an enemy’s respiratory system and suffocate them from within. However, the ability has one critical weakness: strong winds. Powerful gusts can disperse their smoke forms and directly threaten their lives.
4. Shikotsumyaku (Dead Bone Pulse)

Kimimaro proved that bones could become more terrifying weapons than any sword. Shikotsumyaku allows him to extract bones from his body and use them as weapons, while also hardening his skeleton to withstand incoming attacks. During the Sasuke Retrieval arc, his ultimate technique, Dance of the Seedling Fern, transformed the battlefield into a deadly forest of bone spikes.
What makes Shikotsumyaku particularly impressive is its ability to provide both offense and defense without requiring external weapons. Kimimaro was an exceptionally dangerous fighter, and his terminal illness was the only thing holding him back.
3. Typhoon Release

Most shinobi would be incredibly proud to land a clean hit on Sasuke. However, Nowaki’s Typhoon Release takes things a step further by generating a massive storm that briefly forces Sasuke’s Susanoo into a defensive position. This formidable wind-based ability appears in the Naruto Shippuden: Sasuke Shinden novel adaptation, making a strong impression despite receiving relatively little attention across the franchise.
The sheer scale of this ability is its most exciting feature. Nowaki can create storms large enough to cover an entire island, turning the surrounding environment into a weapon while obstructing enemies’ vision and movement. While Shikotsumyaku is especially dangerous at close range, Typhoon Release threatens opponents across an enormous area.
2. The Kurama Clan’s Genjutsu That Causes Real Physical Damage

Genjutsu is already dangerous enough when it traps someone inside an imaginary world. However, the rare ability possessed by the Kurama clan takes the concept to a much darker level. The clan’s most powerful users can create illusions so realistic that a victim’s brain turns imagined injuries into actual physical damage. The Naruto storyline featuring Yakumo Kurama explored the terrifying nature of this power.
What makes this ability particularly remarkable is how completely it changes the rules of a battle. Even a stronger opponent becomes virtually helpless if they cannot distinguish reality from illusion, and a single convincing hallucination can turn the tide of a fight. However, Yakumo struggles significantly to control her own power, making it dangerous to herself as well.
1. Ketsuryugan (Blood Dragon Eye)

Although the Sharingan and Byakugan have consistently taken the spotlight, the Ketsuryugan deserves far more recognition. This rare dojutsu belongs to the Chinoike clan and combines powerful genjutsu with the ability to manipulate iron-rich liquids. Chino demonstrates its immense potential in Sasuke Shinden, where the eye’s unusual abilities make her an exceptionally formidable opponent.
What puts the Ketsuryugan at the top of this list is its combination of cunning and sheer brutality. Users can manipulate iron-rich liquids, trap enemies in genjutsu, and employ the technique known as “Exploding Human” to turn a bleeding target into a biological bomb.
While the Kurama clan’s genjutsu primarily attacks the mind, the Ketsuryugan dominates both the mind and the physical world. With no surviving users walking the shinobi world in the era of Boruto, it remains one of the most brutal Kekkei Genkai left behind by the original series.
