These anime masterpieces keep viewers on the edge of their seats with dark, brutal, and meticulously planned journeys of revenge.
Few things can hook an audience quite like a deep-rooted grudge. Someone murders the protagonist’s parents, burns down their home, or betrays their friends, and the rest of the story becomes a relentless pursuit of justice. Anime has explored this theme countless times, though the outcomes can be dramatically different.
Some protagonists successfully carry out their revenge, while others watch it slip beyond their reach. Then there are those who realize, only when it is already too late, that vengeance comes at an unbearable price. Here are six anime that deliver some of the most intense revenge stories.
6. Claymore

In a world inspired by medieval Europe, Clare begins as a nameless orphan who follows Teresa, the strongest Claymore of her time. Teresa eventually breaks the rules to protect Clare, prompting the Organization to send other warriors after her. Among them is Priscilla, who awakens into a monster and kills Teresa, leaving Clare clutching the severed head of the woman who had protected her.
Clare later takes part of Teresa’s flesh to become a Claymore herself, receiving the lowest rank of No. 47. Madhouse’s 2007 anime follows her pursuit of Priscilla. Claymore takes sixth place because the anime ends before Clare can fully settle her score.
5. Vinland Saga

In Vinland Saga, Thorfinn is still a child when his father, Thors, is killed by Askeladd’s men. Determined to avenge him, Thorfinn joins Askeladd’s band and repeatedly challenges him to duels after their campaigns, hoping to defeat him in a fair fight. Yet he suffers bitter defeat after bitter defeat. The turning point comes when Thorfinn is permanently denied his revenge, as Prince Canute kills Askeladd first. Thorfinn’s furious reaction ultimately leads him into slavery.
Vinland Saga takes fifth place because its revenge plot collapses to make way for a story with much greater scope.
4. Berserk

Guts devotes years of his life to Griffith and the Band of the Hawk. Griffith, however, sacrifices nearly all of his comrades to demonic beings during the Eclipse and is reborn as Femto. Guts survives but loses his left forearm and right eye, receives the Brand of Sacrifice, and swears revenge.
He becomes the Black Swordsman, hunting Apostles with his enormous Dragonslayer sword. Berserk ranks fourth because Guts remains unable to let go of his hatred, while Thorfinn ultimately manages to move beyond his.
3. Code Geass

Lelouch in Code Geass was once a prince whose mother, Marianne, was assassinated, while his younger sister Nunnally was left disabled. Their father, Emperor Charles, showed little sympathy and sent the siblings to Japan as political pawns. Years later, C.C. grants Lelouch the power of Geass—the ability to force anyone to obey his commands—and he assumes the masked identity of Zero to bring down Britannia.
Every plan unfolds like a move on a chessboard, while the consequences repeatedly fall upon the people Lelouch loves. Code Geass takes third place because its razor-sharp revenge story eventually grows far beyond a simple personal vendetta.
2. 91 Days

Angelo Lagusa is still a boy living in Lawless when the Vanetti mafia family murders his parents and younger brother in 91 Days. He escapes, adopts the name Avilio Bruno, and spends seven years living in hiding. Then, near the end of the Prohibition era, an anonymous letter draws him back. Avilio infiltrates the Vanetti family by befriending Nero, the Don’s son, and begins eliminating those responsible for his family’s murder one by one.
Studio Shuka’s 12-episode series is slow-burning, bleak, and intensely gripping. 91 Days earns second place because it never loses sight of its single driving objective: revenge.
1. Gankutsuou

Edmond Dantès was once a sailor with a promising life until his friends betrayed him and had him imprisoned on false charges. He eventually escapes with the help of a mysterious force known as Gankutsuou and returns as the wealthy, sophisticated, and endlessly patient Count of Monte Cristo.
Gonzo’s 2004 series is set in the year 5053 and follows the Count as he charms Albert de Morcerf before systematically destroying the families of those who betrayed him through a series of carefully calculated moves. This exceptional anime claims the No. 1 spot because few revenge stories execute a plan as cold, patient, and devastatingly thorough as the Count’s.
