Top 1% Office Worker Still Models on Weekends—and Has a Strict “Don’t Fall in Love With Me” Rule
Aoi Furuhama earns a top 1% salary but still models on weekends for fun—and maintains a strict rule telling fans not to genuinely fall in love with her.
Despite earning an office salary that reportedly places her among the top 1% for her age group, Aoi Furuhama—the 2022 Miss Kyushu University winner—continues working as a photo model on weekends. She says money is not the motivation. Instead, modeling is a way for her to maintain her beauty, while she has also introduced an unusual rule for supporters: “Don’t fall in love with me.”
At 26, Aoi Furuhama leads an intriguing double life. Although her salary at an advertising company reportedly puts her among the top 1% of people her age, she spends her weekends modeling for amateur photographers.
However, Furuhama firmly refuses to engage in the kind of romantic fantasy marketing sometimes associated with underground idols or hostesses, in which supporters are encouraged to believe they have a special emotional connection with the performer.
“I openly tell people that I’m an office worker who does this as a side job, and I tell my fans directly, ‘You’re not allowed to develop genuine romantic feelings for me,’” Furuhama explained. “To avoid misunderstandings, I never use the word ‘like’ toward individual fans, and I never tell anyone that they should support only me.”
Furuhama’s strict boundaries stem partly from difficult experiences in her past. When she first entered Kyushu University, her naturally outgoing and friendly personality reportedly backfired, as several male students mistakenly believed she had romantic feelings for them. The misunderstandings damaged relationships and led to social conflicts.
Long before her transformation during university, Furuhama struggled intensely with insecurity about her appearance. Born in Oita Prefecture, she attended an average-performing public high school and buried herself in her studies largely because of anxiety about her future.
“I threw myself into studying because I thought, ‘If I’m unattractive and I don’t study either, I’ll never be able to make money in the future,’” she recalled.
Her transformation came during university. Furuhama said that repeatedly using double-eyelid glue eventually resulted in a lasting double-eyelid crease. She also lost 7 kilograms while exhausted by the pressures of student life. Eventually, she became able to look in the mirror with confidence and feel satisfied with her appearance, paving the way for her eventual victory in the university beauty pageant.
Today, Furuhama has no illusions about the harsh realities of the entertainment industry. A self-described “idol otaku” who recently spent 400,000 yen on an expensive camera simply to photograph other beautiful women, she has no intention of giving up the stability of her corporate career for potentially short-lived fame in show business.
Her previous company prohibited employees from taking on side jobs, leaving her exhausted and feeling as though her youthful appearance was gradually fading amid an endless cycle of working and sleeping. Today, she treats weekend modeling purely as a way to refine her appearance and pursue something she enjoys, rather than as something she needs for financial reasons.
“I’ve never had any sweet fantasies about entering the entertainment industry,” Furuhama said. “I worked hard to graduate from Kyushu University and build my corporate career, so this is definitely the path I intend to stick with.”
