Despite having premiered just four days ago, Where the Mask Ends, starring Tian Xiwei and Yan An, has made a major splash online. The series has become a hot topic thanks to its impressive achievements, while also sparking debate over its storyline and acting performances. Since October 16, the drama has reportedly set three notable records.

First, the production has secured 33 advertising brands, the highest number for a female-led drama on Youku in the past three years. It was also recognized as the fastest drama of 2026 to reach a popularity score of 9,000 on the platform, achieving the milestone just 26 hours after its premiere. The series then surpassed 10,000 popularity points after approximately 48 hours, setting another record for the fastest time to reach that mark this year.
One of the key factors behind the drama’s popularity is the casting of Tian Xiwei as the female lead. The actress has impressed viewers with her stunning appearance, living up to the nickname “historical drama doll” that many fans have given her. Meanwhile, male lead Yan An has also drawn attention for his striking visuals, reminding viewers why he was once selected as the main visual of the K-pop group PENTAGON.

In terms of the storyline, Where the Mask Ends follows A Chou, a low-status young woman who works collecting and disposing of human waste and is frequently looked down upon and bullied by others. Because she looks almost identical to the noblewoman Wei Rao, A Chou is chosen to serve as a substitute bride. She is married off to Lu Zhuo, the heir to a duke’s mansion, in the hope that the marriage will bring him good fortune and help him recover from his illness.
However, Lu Zhuo unexpectedly regains consciousness and wants to annul the marriage after discovering that his bride is an impostor. Knowing Wei Rao’s cruel personality, he remains suspicious of his new wife. Meanwhile, the real Wei Rao learns that Lu Zhuo has recovered and begins plotting to reclaim her identity and marriage. To protect her newfound position, A Chou must confront the schemes unfolding within the household, gradually build her own influence, and win her husband’s heart.

Despite its impressive achievements, Where the Mask Ends has faced mixed reactions regarding the performances of some cast members, including Tian Xiwei, as well as the quality of its screenplay. There is no denying that the drama continuously delivers emotionally charged situations designed to keep viewers hooked. However, some audiences believe it relies too heavily on the familiar “wish-fulfillment” formula, repeatedly using revenge, humiliating comeuppances, and dramatic reversals to provide instant satisfaction, while paying insufficient attention to logical consistency and the credibility of the story’s developments.
