Were expectations simply too high? Disney+’s ambitious new series The Remarried Empress has been generating buzz and controversy almost every day since its release. From Ju Ji Hoon’s complexion and Shin Min Ah‘s costumes to the cast’s resemblance to their original characters, the discussions have been relentless. Despite attracting attention with its star-studded lineup, the actors’ appearances and visuals seem to be generating even more conversation than the series itself.
Released on November 3, Disney+’s original series The Remarried Empress is a romantic fantasy based on the popular web novel and webtoon of the same name. The story follows Navier (played by Shin Min Ah), empress of the Eastern Empire, who is informed by Emperor Sovieshu (Ju Ji Hoon) that he wants a divorce. She subsequently remarries Prince Heinrey (Lee Jong Suk) of the Western Kingdom.

The Remarried Empress is based on a hugely popular intellectual property that has accumulated 2.97 billion views worldwide. Expectations were already high during production, particularly after Shin Min Ah, Ju Ji Hoon, Lee Jong Suk, and Lee Se Young joined the leading cast. The series also attracted attention for its romantic fantasy setting in a Western-style imperial court, a backdrop rarely seen in Korean dramas.
However, reactions to The Remarried Empress following its premiere have been mixed.

The first issue to attract criticism was Ju Ji Hoon’s complexion. Playing Sovieshu, the emperor of the Eastern Empire, the actor stood out for having a noticeably darker skin tone than the other cast members. Some viewers felt that his appearance did not match the image of an emperor, while others even expressed concern about his health.
There were also comments that his look was far removed from Sovieshu’s glamorous, aristocratic image in the original story. His hairstyle and costumes, in particular, received criticism. On the other hand, some viewers argued that Ju Ji Hoon’s signature charisma made him a good fit for the emperor.

Shin Min Ah’s costumes also became a subject of debate. Playing Empress Navier, she wears elaborate dresses and accessories intended to convey the grandeur of the imperial court. However, some viewers felt that the outfits looked awkward and overly theatrical.
Meanwhile, reports that the production used genuinely expensive dresses prompted a different interpretation: the issue might not lie with the costumes themselves, but rather with the series’ direction and styling. Although considerable effort went into creating the elaborate outfits, viewers remain divided over the results.
The cast’s resemblance to their original characters has also become a hot topic. Lee Jong Suk, who plays Heinrey, disappointed some fans with his black hair, which differs from the character’s appearance in the original work. Nevertheless, he has received praise for his tall stature, military uniform, and portrayal of Heinrey’s playful, mischievous personality. Lee Se Young, who plays Rashta, has likewise been praised for capturing the atmosphere of her original character.
The series’ setting has also drawn varied reactions. Some viewers find it unfamiliar to see Korean dialogue and Hangul in a world featuring palaces and costumes reminiscent of medieval Europe. Opinions are divided over the show’s attempt to bring a relatively uncommon romantic fantasy genre to Korean television, with some welcoming its fresh approach while others find the combination awkward.

That said, reactions to the series have not been entirely negative. Shortly after its release, The Remarried Empress topped Disney+’s domestic Top 10 series chart in South Korea. It also reached No. 1 in Japan, demonstrating the considerable interest surrounding the show. Its lavish visuals and recreations of key scenes from the original story have also received praise.
Ultimately, the intense discussion surrounding The Remarried Empress is closely tied to the enormous popularity of its source material. Readers who are already familiar with the characters’ appearances and personalities through the web novel and webtoon naturally have high expectations. As a result, the live-action adaptation faces an equally demanding standard of judgment.
However, debates over the actors’ complexions and costumes alone cannot determine the overall quality of the series. So far, only four episodes of the 10-episode series have been released.
The Remarried Empress entered its premiere with enormous expectations. Now, attention is focused on whether its star-studded cast and hugely popular source material can translate into lasting success—and whether the series can silence the criticism through the quality of its storytelling.
