Interest in BLACKPINK has exploded, with the group ranking No. 1 on both domestic and global comprehensive power indexes. However, high numbers do not necessarily translate into positive sentiment. As controversy over the group’s 10th anniversary treatment of fans continues, dating rumors surrounding Lisa have also emerged, making it increasingly common for people to encounter BLACKPINK through controversies rather than their music.
According to K-pop analysis index K-POPIT BOARD on August 12, BLACKPINK ranked first on the Korean Comprehensive Power Index, PWR(KR), with 77.1 points. The group also topped the Global Comprehensive Power Index, PWR(GL), with 72.4 points.

The group’s detailed metrics were also remarkably high. Its MAS score, which measures media and public attention, reached 91.7 points, while its FHI score, reflecting fandom activity and continuity, stood at 90.1. The VCR score, which measures how effectively buzz translates into actual streaming consumption, reached a perfect 100.0. On the surface, the figures suggest that public attention, fandom activity, and music consumption surrounding BLACKPINK remain extremely strong.
One particularly striking figure is the sharp rise in the D-tier metric, which increased by 14,759%. The jump is exceptionally large. Given BLACKPINK’s recent circumstances, however, it may be difficult to interpret this simply as a sign of growing popularity. The group has recently faced criticism over how its 10th anniversary was handled, with fans complaining that there was not enough anniversary content or events to match their expectations. Jisoo was seen in tears in front of fans and expressed her regret, while Rosé also posted a lengthy apology.

Amid the controversy, Lisa’s recent activities have also attracted disappointment from some fans. She shared photos of herself enjoying a vacation on social media but did not post a separate message commemorating BLACKPINK’s 10th anniversary. She subsequently found herself at the center of another controversy after dating rumors involving Thai actor Blue Pongtiwat emerged. Against the backdrop of fans expressing disappointment that the group’s 10th anniversary had not been properly celebrated, and other members personally apologizing, scrutiny of Lisa also intensified.

The FHI score of 90.1 should not necessarily be interpreted as evidence that the fandom is in a completely positive mood. In recent social media discussions, fans have continued to express disappointment and frustration over BLACKPINK’s 10th anniversary activities. Some have even talked about leaving the fandom. Since FHI incorporates factors such as YouTube engagement and social media activity, dissatisfaction with the group and debates surrounding the members’ actions can also appear as active fandom engagement. In other words, a high FHI score does not automatically mean that fan loyalty is unwavering.
By contrast, the perfect VCR score of 100.0 demonstrates BLACKPINK’s enduring ability to generate music consumption. Regardless of how the buzz is created, the group remains highly effective at converting attention into streams. Its long-established recognition, extensive catalog of hits, and the individual popularity of its members all contribute to this result.

BLACKPINK is a group capable of attracting public attention through each member individually. However, the foundation of sustained group activities remains its fandom. Fans are the key consumer base supporting the group through albums, concerts, merchandise, and other products over the long term. For now, BLACKPINK can maintain strong indicators through its enormous public profile and established fandom even if some fans leave. But if controversies over its treatment of fans continue to recur, it would be difficult to guarantee that the group can maintain the same strength in the long run.
The image BLACKPINK leaves in the public’s mind also matters. If people increasingly encounter the group through controversies over fan treatment or members’ private lives rather than music and performances, high levels of buzz will not necessarily translate into an influx of new fans. Public attention turning into streams and the formation of a new fandom are two separate things.
BLACKPINK’s latest metrics therefore present something of a paradox. The group remains powerful enough to turn controversy into massive buzz, while that heightened attention can still translate into music consumption. Yet beneath those impressive figures, signs of fan dissatisfaction and potential fandom withdrawal are also emerging. What BLACKPINK needs right now may not be even greater attention, but a way to rebuild the trust that has been shaken.
