It has been eight years since the late Kim Dongyoon, formerly of the group Spectrum, passed away.
He died suddenly on July 27, 2018, at the young age of 20. The heartbreaking news came just two months after his official debut in the music industry.
At the time of his death, his agency WYNN Entertainment announced the news through the official fan cafe, saying, “The sudden tragedy has left the bereaved family, Spectrum members, and all staff deeply saddened as they mourn the loss.”
The funeral was held quietly and privately according to the family’s wishes. An autopsy was conducted to determine the exact cause of death, but no specific details were disclosed.
Kim Dongyoon first gained attention in 2017 by participating in JTBC’s survival audition program MIXNINE. Known for his strong skills and good looks, he ranked 21st in the male category, building a solid fanbase.
In May 2018, he debuted as a member of the seven-member boy group Spectrum with the album Be Born, featuring the title track “Light It Up.” At the debut showcase, he expressed his aspirations by saying, “I’ve improved a lot through MIXNINE. I want to study composing diligently to write great songs with the members and help promote our team widely.”
Notably, he remained actively engaged with his fans, even hosting live broadcasts on his personal account until the day before his death. This sudden loss deeply shocked and saddened his family, fans, and the public. His younger sister posted on her personal account, asking for heartfelt final messages wishing him happiness in heaven, which added to the sorrow.
In their grief, Spectrum members honored him by releasing the tribute song “Dear My” in September of the same year, which Kim Dongyoon had helped write.
They continued to perform on stage with his parts and spot left vacant as a sign of respect. However, due to worsening management conditions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Spectrum disbanded in July 2020, with members pursuing individual paths.
