The Group I fixture in Philadelphia was delayed for nearly two hours because of thunderstorms, according to Reuters. Heavy rain significantly affected the playing surface, forcing organizers to deploy ground staff to remove water before the players could safely continue warming up.
During the delay, Kylian Mbappe was filmed walking across the pitch and repeatedly pointing toward certain areas of the grass. His gestures made it appear as though he was personally instructing the workers on where to clear the remaining water. The person who uploaded the video on X wrote, “Mbappe is showing the cleaning staff where they need to wipe the pitch.”

The clip quickly attracted around 16,000 interactions. Fans jokingly gave the French forward new titles such as “admiral” and “head of the cleaning department.”
Although the moment looked humorous, viewers suggested that Mbappe had likely noticed an area where water remained after the storm. Rather than complaining to the referee, the 1998-born striker appeared to signal directly to the ground staff. His serious expression and decisive pointing made the scene even more entertaining for fans online.

Wet grass and standing water can cause the ball to move unpredictably while also increasing the risk of players slipping. Pitch conditions are particularly important for fast, technical attackers such as Mbappe, whose game depends heavily on acceleration and close control.
France later secured its place in the next round with a victory over Iraq. Mbappe once again led the attack by scoring twice, taking his reported total at the tournament to four goals in two matches.
