According to people in the Korean film industry, actor Ma Do-shik passed away at 11:07 a.m. on August 14 at the National Medical Center in Seoul.
Born Woo Sang-ik on July 4, 1944, in Goesan, North Chungcheong Province, Ma Do-shik initially pursued athletics and was active as a weightlifter representing the province. He entered the film industry in 1960 after appearing in The Sunflower at Night, which was released in 1965.
Ma Do-shik went on to build a long career with appearances in numerous films, often taking on supporting and minor roles. His filmography included Imbecile (1985), starring singer-actor Jeon Young-rok, as well as Dark City (1990) and Death Song (1991). He became particularly recognizable for his villainous roles in action films. One notable example was his portrayal of a Chinese character in the 1973 film Valley of the Villain.
Beyond acting, Ma Do-shik also ventured into filmmaking behind the camera. In 1993, under the name Ma Ju-haeng, he wrote, directed and starred in Lost Desire, released in 1994. He also took on the role of songwriter for the film, demonstrating his involvement in multiple aspects of its production. In 2024, Ma Do-shik served as an adviser to the Korean Film Actors Association, continuing his involvement in the Korean film industry later in life.
Ma Do-shik’s funeral has been held at Room 203 of the National Medical Center Funeral Hall in Seoul. His funeral procession is scheduled for 12:40 p.m. on August 15. The veteran actor leaves behind a decades-long career spanning acting, filmmaking and other contributions to Korea’s film industry.
