Actress Ha Young reportedly broke down in tears while filming her upcoming drama amid the growing controversy surrounding her family history. However, the latest update has done little to win over Korean netizens.
On August 16, Korean media reported that Ha Young is continuing to film SBS’s upcoming K-Drama The Long Shot Trial despite the intense backlash surrounding revelations about her great-grandfather. According to reports, Ha Young suddenly began crying during filming on August 13 and struggled to regain her composure, resulting in a temporary halt to production. She reportedly spent several hours resting and calming down before ultimately returning to the set and completing her scheduled filming.
The incident comes as Ha Young remains at the center of a major controversy over the alleged pro-Japanese activities of her great-grandfather Ahn Sang Ho during Korea’s Japanese colonial period. The controversy began after Ha Young appeared on KBS2’s Problem Child in House on August 7, where she spoke about her family history.
While discussing the generations of doctors in her family, Ha Young shared that her great-grandfather had opened one of the first Western medicine clinics in Hanyang and treated Emperor Gojong. Her comments quickly prompted online sleuthing, with netizens identifying the relative as Ahn Sang Ho and uncovering historical records concerning his activities during the colonial era.

As criticism intensified, Ha Young eventually issued an apology. She explained that she had personally begun looking into the relevant historical materials after the controversy erupted and, in the process, learned about her great-grandfather’s pro-Japanese activities. Ha Young apologized for speaking about her family history so casually without properly understanding the painful historical context behind it.
Despite her apology, however, the controversy continued to affect her public activities. Attention soon turned to whether Ha Young would remain in The Long Shot Trial, which is already well into production.
SBS previously stated that a significant amount of filming had already been completed and that the network was aware of the controversy and closely monitoring developments. With production reportedly approaching its final stages, suddenly replacing Ha Young would also create considerable practical difficulties. That said, for now, Ha Young has continued filming.
But news that she became overwhelmed and cried on set was met with an unexpectedly cold response from many Korean netizens. Rather than expressing concern for the actress, numerous commenters questioned why she was still participating in filming. Several reactions also suggested that, regardless of how emotionally difficult the situation may be for Ha Young personally, critics believe she should voluntarily step away from the project rather than continue filming while the controversy remains unresolved.
