In July 2022, Hong Kong’s entertainment industry was shaken by a horrific incident during a concert by Mirror. A massive 600kg LED screen suspended above the stage suddenly fell, striking at least two dancers. Among them, Li Kai Yin suffered catastrophic injuries to his head and neck, including brain hemorrhaging, a fractured fourth cervical vertebra, and displacement of the fifth. He underwent 10 surgeries, including nerve grafts and spinal reconstruction, narrowly surviving the ordeal. Although he lived, he was left permanently paralyzed from the neck down and now relies on a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

However, the tragedy did not end there. On April 25, his father, Li Shing Lam, suddenly passed away. Just a month earlier, he had been diagnosed with a chronic heart condition. His health quickly deteriorated after experiencing vomiting, fever, and breathing difficulties, eventually requiring hospitalization and life support. What was initially thought to be a simple infection turned fatal in a short time.
His father’s passing has deepened public sympathy for Li Kai Yin’s family. For the past four years, both parents had been by his side day and night in the hospital. His father even quit his job to help care for him as the family could no longer afford professional caregivers. According to reports, the family has been burdened with monthly medical expenses reaching millions of Hong Kong dollars. The 10 million HKD compensation previously provided after the accident has already been exhausted.

Facing financial collapse, Li Kai Yin’s father had previously sought help and filed lawsuits against 12 companies involved, demanding compensation. However, those companies chose to pursue legal battles rather than continue covering the enormous medical costs. The next court hearing is scheduled for May 4, but with his father—who had been representing him—now gone, the future of the case has become uncertain.
Following this loss, the responsibility of caring for Li Kai Yin now falls entirely on his elderly mother, who is reportedly physically and emotionally exhausted.

Adding to the heartbreak, Li Kai Yin and his longtime girlfriend, singer So Tsz Ching, ended their engagement in March. After years together and plans to marry in late 2022, she ultimately chose to leave, unable to continue the relationship amid his uncertain recovery.

Before the accident, Li Kai Yin was considered one of Hong Kong’s most promising dancers and choreographers, having worked with numerous top-tier artists. In 2018, he competed in a reality show, finishing in the top 55, and later became a main dancer for Mirror. Known for his technical skill and captivating performances, he was widely seen as a rising star with a bright future—one that was tragically cut short by the accident.
