A top K-Pop idol became embroiled in a so-called “fan power struggle” controversy after a heated exchange with fans on a paid fan communication service.
Recently, TVXQ‘s Yunho logged into his paid fan communication platform after about two months. While some fans were glad to receive his message after a long time, many expressed disappointment over the infrequent communication. Since it is a paid service, fans seemed to expect a certain level of interaction, leading to dissatisfaction.

When fans voiced their complaints, Yunho responded directly by mentioning one fan’s username. He said, “It’s okay if you don’t understand. I’m trying to come to here as much as I can, and I’m sorry for not meeting your expectations, but this is the best I can do. Please don’t provoke needlessly.”
However, this remark sparked further reactions among fans. One fan expressed regret over Yunho’s communication style, stating, “If he had at least come once a month, fans probably wouldn’t be this upset.”
The fan added, “I know some people find it difficult to communicate and everyone has a different personality, but this is part of being an idol and a paid communication app. Even once a month would’ve been better. The last time he came was early May,” expressing dissatisfaction about the communication frequency. The implication was that as a paid service, communication with fans is an expected part of an idol’s role.

The same fan also criticized Yunho for mentioning the fan’s username directly. “We were all surprised to see a fan’s ID called out and taken as a point of contention. We understand he’s busy, but using that as an excuse and telling us not to provoke was very disappointing,” they said.
They added, “If it’s hard to use communication apps, then don’t come at all. Fans will just unsubscribe,” implying that the response to fans’ dissatisfaction was more upsetting than the lack of communication itself.
In response, Yunho once again directly rebutted, saying, “Don’t talk like this,” and added, “Those who speak provocatively don’t have to come.” Rather than accepting criticism about insufficient communication, he drew a clear line against some fans’ manner of expression.
He continued, “I respect that you might feel hurt, but those who express themselves like this are not showing mutual respect. People without respect should leave. I ask for your cooperation going forward.” While acknowledging fans’ feelings of disappointment, he appeared unwilling to agree with the way criticism toward him was expressed.
This controversy began over complaints regarding the frequency of a paid fan communication service, but escalated as a fan publicly raised an issue and the artist responded directly. Since expectations about the frequency and manner of communication between fans and artists can differ, a variety of reactions are expected around this incident.
