Recently, clips from a video titled “Why Women Should Never Travel Alone in Africa,” uploaded to the YouTube channel ‘I Don’t Know Ji’ (real name Ahn Eun-ji), spread across several online communities.
The video was originally uploaded in March and documents I Don’t Know Ji’s solo trip to Tanzania. As of August 31, the video has surpassed 1 million views.
The scene that particularly drew attention showed a group of local men surrounding the YouTuber while she was traveling.
In the footage, ‘I Don’t Know Ji’ is seen riding on the back of a motorcycle driven by a man when she becomes surrounded by several men. Some of them attempt to kiss her on the cheek, press their bodies against her, and touch her arms, shoulders and other parts of her body.
Clearly startled, ‘I Don’t Know Ji’ repeatedly tried to move away and told them, “Don’t touch me.” However, more people continued to gather around her, making it difficult to bring the situation under control. Her phone was also captured falling to the ground amid the chaos.
The video also included a caption warning viewers, “Warning: This may be disturbing to watch.” ‘I Don’t Know Ji’ expressed both discomfort and shock over what happened.
In the video description, she wrote that going on an African safari had been on her bucket list and that it was the sole reason she had made the trip. However, she described the experience as “honestly the worst travel destination.”
Viewers also expressed concern for her safety.
One commenter wrote, “YouTube is important, but your life is more important. I want to keep watching your videos for a long time, so please travel somewhere safe.” Another viewer said, “It’s entertaining for those of us watching from home, but my heart is pounding because I’m worried something might happen to you.” An overseas viewer also commented, “Don’t go alone. I’m really worried about you.”
‘I Don’t Know Ji’ is the travel and lifestyle YouTube channel run by Ahn Eun-ji. Her subscriber count, which stood at around 320,000 during an interview in 2023, has since grown to approximately 440,000.
She first gained attention after a video of her solo trip to Russia following the Korean college entrance exam, including a journey aboard the Trans-Siberian Railway, surpassed 1 million views within a day. She has since traveled to numerous countries, including Mongolia, building a loyal following with her solo travel content.
The Tanzania trip has once again drawn attention to travel safety, as the footage offers a stark look at the unexpected situations that can arise when traveling abroad alone.
