Since Disney+’s The Remarried Empress premiered, viewers have been divided over Shin Min Ah‘s vocal delivery and interpretation of Navier.
Some viewers have expressed disappointment, commenting, “Her voice lacks power,” “She doesn’t convey the authority of an empress,” and “Her vocal delivery and pronunciation seem unstable.”
However, others have come to her defense. Comments such as “It seems like she’s deliberately speaking in a restrained manner,” “Her acting isn’t particularly distracting,” and “She’s perfectly watchable” have also appeared. Some viewers have even suggested that the issue lies more with the direction than with the actress herself.
Amid the debate, an unexpected name has resurfaced: actress Soo Ae.
Back in 2019, Soo Ae performed Navier’s lines in a promotional advertisement for the The Remarried Empress web novel on Naver Series.
At the time, Soo Ae had neither the elaborate palace sets nor the extravagant empress gowns seen in the current drama. Wearing a simple black outfit, she portrayed Navier using nothing but her facial expressions and voice in front of the camera.

Seven years later, with Shin Min Ah’s full-fledged drama adaptation now released, that short advertisement has once again become a point of comparison.
Online reactions have included comments such as, “The sense of authority is completely different,” “Voice delivery is what makes an actor,” “This is exactly how I imagined Navier,” and “She draws you in even without elaborate costumes.”
In particular, viewers have once again praised Soo Ae’s characteristically low, firm voice and restrained expressions, saying they perfectly captured Navier’s image as a cool-headed empress who never loses her dignity.

Of course, others point out that directly comparing Soo Ae and Shin Min Ah is not entirely fair. The two performances were created under very different circumstances: a roughly 30-second advertisement cannot be measured by the same standards as a 10-episode drama.
Shin Min Ah has also received praise for her stunning visuals and elegant aura, which many believe suit Navier perfectly. Quite a few viewers have expressed the opinion that “the current portrayal of Navier is perfectly good, too.”
Still, what makes the discussion particularly interesting is that an advertisement from seven years ago has suddenly come under renewed scrutiny. The debate over the acting in The Remarried Empress has unexpectedly led to a reassessment of Soo Ae’s brief portrayal of Navier.
