There has been a heated debate over the so-called “card cutting” content by Woni of the group RESCENE. Additionally, as some edited videos have spread, criticism that this is a forced attempt to find fault continues.
Recently, a live video titled “Charmander Pokémon Center Visit” was broadcast on RESCENE’s YouTube channel.
The video showed Woni visiting a Pokémon card shop, unboxing Pokémon TCG (trading card game) packs, and interacting live with global fans.
Over about an hour of streaming, Woni opened Pokémon packs and series boxes, reacting to obtaining ultra-rare cards, trying out card sleeve and toploader storage methods, and matching the drawn cards with RESCENE members who resemble them.

Known among fans as having a similar vibe as a Charmander, Woni said she became interested in Pokémon and enjoys gacha or card cutting content, which is why she prepared this content.
While unboxing, the card shop owner proposed, “In the US, there’s a trend called box cutting,” suggesting cutting unopened card packs with scissors. Unlike the usual method of cutting the top to avoid damaging the cards, the proposed “box cutting” involves slicing through the middle of the card pack, focusing on capturing reactions of despair when ultra-rare cards appear.
Upon the owner’s suggestion, Woni hesitated, saying “Shall we try it?” then “Maybe not,” but after the owner’s repeated urging, she finally cut one pack in half. Having done the so-called “half-cut,” Woni expressed regret that there were Charmander cards she wanted and cards liked by members in the half-cut pack.

Woni continued the content by opening card packs in the usual way, but after the broadcast, only the scene where she half-cut a card pack was edited and rapidly spread on social media. Some viewers who saw only this scene expressed discomfort, accusing her of damaging the card pack.

However, netizens who know that Woni did not half-cut all the packs and only did so after much hesitation and the owner’s persistent urging, rebutted claims of unfair criticism against Woni.
They urged watching the full video, pointed out the owner’s repeated persuasion, and noted that this kind of content had also been popular overseas, refuting the unfair criticisms.
