According to Disney+ Korea on April 30, Gold Land ranked No.1 in the Korea TOP 10 chart, overtaking MBC’s Perfect Crown. Despite its 19+ rating, the bold and provocative content has sparked explosive reactions immediately after its premiere.
Gold Land tells the story of Kim Hee-joo, played by Park Bo-young, a customs officer who gets her hands on gold bars worth 150 billion KRW from a smuggling organization. She is then thrown into a chaotic world of greed and betrayal, fighting to claim the treasure for herself. True to its adults-only rating, the first episode boldly depicts characters’ desires, violence, and psychological breakdowns, quickly immersing viewers and capturing their attention.
The story begins with Hee-joo living an ordinary life as an international airport security officer before becoming entangled in a gold smuggling case. As someone who once upheld rules and order, she suddenly finds herself on the boundary between legality and desire. What initially starts as a fight for survival gradually transforms into pure greed, heightening the tension step by step.
The characters surrounding Hee-joo also act based on their own motives, creating cracks in their relationships. Her dangerous partner Woo-gi, played by Kim Sung-cheol, walks a fine line between cooperation and betrayal. Her lover Do-kyung, portrayed by Lee Hyun-wook, suppresses emotions while showing an obsessive desire for the gold. Corrupt police officer Jin-man, played by Kim Hee-won, manipulates the situation for both power and profit, while executive Park, played by Lee Kwang-soo, relentlessly pursues the gold, increasing the pressure.

Going beyond a simple crime thriller, Gold Land presents a psychological narrative centered on the question: “What choice would you make if you had 150 billion KRW worth of gold in your hands?” It directly explores how easily humans can collapse when faced with absolute value.
Another major highlight is Park Bo-young’s shocking transformation, as she completely sheds her signature sweet and lovable image.

In the released episodes, Hee-joo has endured repeated violence and threats under the name of family. Later, while working at the Gold Land casino, she meets pilot Do-kyung and begins to dream of happiness for the first time. However, everything collapses after a sudden accident, and she is forced to return to the most horrifying place with the gold bars worth 150 billion KRW, creating an intense storyline.
Park Bo-young has long been loved for her warm and bright image across many projects. She previously showcased a more mature and heavier character in Our Unwritten Seoul, successfully expanding her acting range. However, her truly new face is fully revealed in Gold Land, surpassing her previous transformation and delivering a darker, more intense performance that has shocked audiences.

Despite being her first thriller, her control over the narrative is overwhelming. She convincingly portrays a character pushed to the edge, capturing trembling fear and fierce determination to survive. From raw, physically demanding action scenes to emotionally turbulent moments, she delivers a realistic and gripping performance, earning praise such as “as expected from Park Bo-young.”
Following the broadcast, online reactions poured in, including comments like, “I’ve never seen Park Bo-young like this before,” “It’s her first thriller, but it fits her perfectly,” and “She completely embodies Kim Hee-joo.” Many also praised her action skills and versatility, reaffirming her reputation as a “trustworthy actress.”

Having never stayed in one image, Park Bo-young is once again signaling the birth of another iconic role from the very first release. Anticipation is high for what she will continue to show in Gold Land.
The Disney+ original series Gold Land, starring Park Bo-young, releases two episodes every Wednesday.
