The long-awaited live-action Naruto movie is gradually offering the first clues about the story fans can expect. Although the project has been in development for years, a newly surfaced plot synopsis and recent casting calls have raised several intriguing questions about the movie’s timeline and the version of Team 7 that will appear on the big screen.

The biggest surprise in the leaked synopsis is the description of the movie as taking place in a parallel universe. The story will follow Uzumaki Naruto, a talented but mischievous young ninja. Together with Uchiha Sasuke and Haruno Sakura, he sets out on his first mission, only for the assignment to quickly turn into something far more dangerous than expected.
The synopsis also reveals that Naruto will have to confront the “demons” within himself, including the literal demon connected to his powers—a detail that clearly points toward the Nine-Tailed Fox sealed inside him. Although the synopsis does not specify exactly what this “first mission” will be, Team 7’s first major assignment outside the Hidden Leaf Village in the original story is the Land of Waves arc.
During that mission, Team 7 is tasked with protecting bridge builder Tazuna and becomes locked in a deadly confrontation with Momochi Zabuza and Haku. It marks the first time Naruto truly experiences the brutality of the ninja world. With its balance of action, emotion, and memorable antagonists, the storyline could provide an ideal starting point for a feature-film adaptation.
The phrase “parallel universe” may simply be the producers’ way of describing Naruto’s fictional world—with its chakra, ninja system, and distinct nations—to mainstream audiences unfamiliar with the manga and anime. However, it could also suggest that the movie will follow an independent continuity, giving director Destin Daniel Cretton greater freedom to combine storylines, alter when certain characters are introduced, or rearrange events while preserving the spirit of Masashi Kishimoto’s original work.

Casting announcements have added even more intrigue surrounding the movie’s timeline. After a global search for the three young ninjas of Team 7 was announced in July, a second casting call was recently shared seeking actors between the ages of 13 and 15 to play Naruto and Sakura. Candidates are expected to be physically fit, with experience in martial arts, dance, or gymnastics preferred, indicating that the movie will begin with teenage versions of Naruto and Sakura.
The absence of a similar public casting call for Sasuke makes the situation even more interesting, suggesting that the role may have already been cast or that the production is searching through private talent agencies. Production notices reportedly list a commitment period from January through August 2027, aligning with reports that filming will begin in the UK early next year. Lionsgate, however, has yet to announce an official theatrical release date.
The project has confirmed the direct involvement of Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto, with Destin Daniel Cretton directing the adaptation for Lionsgate. Kishimoto’s involvement provides a strong creative connection to the source material while still giving Cretton room to bring his own vision to the live-action adaptation.
