The reason behind ITZY member Chaeryeong’s emotional moment during a recent fan meeting has been revealed.
Chaeryeong was previously seen approaching a woman in the audience, holding her hand and breaking down in tears before embracing her tightly. It has since been revealed that the woman was her mother, Choi Sun-young, who recently disclosed that she is undergoing treatment for cancer.
On August 15, Choi Sun-young shared an update on social media, writing that she had been eating different types of meat for a week after being told that she needed to eat well and maintain her strength. She then revealed that she had officially been diagnosed with cancer. “Now I’m officially recognized as a cancer patient. I’m going to the hospital next week, and I wonder what kind of treatment I’ll receive.” Choi Sun-young added that she planned to focus on maintaining her physical strength, laughing more and keeping a positive mindset. She concluded her post by saying that she was grateful every day.
Choi Sun-young had previously hinted at her health struggles before announcing her cancer diagnosis. On July 14, she wrote that she had begun praying despite not normally doing so, adding that she hoped her trembling and fearful feelings would be comforted as she prepared for surgery. Later, on July 26, she announced that she had been discharged from the hospital and was recovering.
She expressed gratitude to her daughters and husband for staying by her side throughout the process, as well as to friends and acquaintances who had hoped and prayed for her recovery. Choi Sun-young later revealed that she had received a cancer diagnosis following the surgery. However, she has not disclosed the specific type or stage of cancer or details regarding her future treatment plan.
Chaeryeong’s older sister, solo singer Lee Chaeyeon, has also previously shared glimpses of caring for their mother through her YouTube channel.
Against this backdrop, footage from ITZY’s fifth fan meeting has attracted renewed attention. During the event, Chaeryeong spotted her mother among the audience and approached her. After taking her hand, the singer began crying before pulling her mother into a tight embrace. Choi Sun-young also hugged her daughter while appearing emotional.
At the time, the reason for Chaeryeong’s tears was not known. Following the revelation of her mother’s cancer diagnosis, however, fans have looked back on the emotional moment with a deeper understanding.
The scene has moved many fans, who have since visited Choi Sun-young’s social media account to leave messages wishing her a speedy recovery. Chaeryeong and her older sister Lee Chaeyeon first became known to the public after appearing together on an SBS audition program. Lee Chaeyeon later pursued activities as a solo singer, while Chaeryeong debuted as a member of ITZY in 2019 and continues to promote with the group.
