K-pop girl group ILLIT will return with its fifth EP, “Break Even,” on Oct. 26, marking the group’s first release in about six months.
The new project follows “It’s Me,” the group’s fourth EP, which arrived in April. According to Belift Lab, the title “Break Even” draws on the economic term for a point where there is neither profit nor loss. In the context of the album, the phrase reflects a decision to stop giving time and emotions to relationships that offer nothing in return, The Korea Times reported.
The theme suggests a shift in ILLIT’s approach to love and relationships. Rather than openly chasing someone, as heard in some of the group’s earlier songs, the new album appears to focus on recognizing when an emotional investment is no longer worth making.
ILLIT has had a packed year leading up to the comeback. “It’s Me,” with its techno-driven sound, delivered a stronger musical and performance style and reached No. 2 on Melon, No. 67 on the Billboard Global 200, and earned four wins on Korean music shows, per Korea JoongAng Daily.
The group also expanded its international activities. In June, ILLIT joined fellow HYBE girl groups LE SSERAFIM and KATSEYE for “Iconic By Mistake,” which reached No. 38 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 22 on the U.K.’s Official Singles Chart.
In Japan, the group released “I Got Your Back,” featuring Jisoo and Momoka of HANA. The track was chosen as the opening theme for the Japanese drama The Rules of Vacation and climbed to No. 2 on Billboard Japan’s Hot 100.
According to asiae, ILLIT has also been on its first concert tour, “ILLIT Live ‘Press Start.'” After sold-out shows in Seoul, five Japanese cities, and Hong Kong, the group is scheduled for encore performances in Incheon in October before concluding the tour in Chiba in December.
Formed through JTBC’s R U Next?, ILLIT debuted in March 2024 with “Magnetic.” The group consists of Yunah, Minju, Moka, Wonhee, and Iroha.
