Soyeon appeared as a guest on JTBC’s Newsroom on September 5, where she took part in an interview.
During the interview, Soyeon drew attention by speaking candidly about the pressure she feels as both the leader of i-dle and a producer behind numerous hit songs. When asked about the shortest amount of time it had taken her to write a song, she admitted, “Actually, I tend to take a very long time when I write songs. I think I need at least a month for each one.”
She revealed that the song that took her the longest to create was “TOMBOY.” Soyeon explained, “For a year, I wrote dozens of songs in order to eventually arrive at ‘TOMBOY.’ It was also the song that gave us our biggest results, so it’s a song I’m very attached to.”
Ahead of the release of her first solo studio album, What a Wonderful Life, on September 7, Soyeon described it as “an album that contains my honesty and a lot of the 29-year-old Jeon Soyeon.” She added that she wanted the title track, “I’m Quitting,” to “give a sense of liberation to everyone who listens to the song.”
Soyeon previously revealed on a web variety show in 2024 that her monthly copyright royalties could vary dramatically. “When my copyright royalties are at their highest, I make 1 billion won a month. When nothing comes in, I sometimes make only 100,000 won,” she said at the time. She has written and composed numerous hit songs throughout her career.
Despite having released so many successful songs, Soyeon admitted that she still struggles with fear. “I’m afraid every single day, and I’m in a slump every single day. Whenever I write a song, I think, ‘How did I ever write a song like that?’ and ‘Maybe I don’t have any talent anymore,’ every single day,” she confessed.
However, Soyeon said she has learned to push through those difficult periods. “But if I endure it and hold on, eventually I overcome it. Because I have those memories, even when I think, ‘This time, it’s really over,’ I manage to keep going. I think the person who endures is the one who wins.”
