On August 27, the Presidential Council on Intellectual Property released a video titled “From Actress to Painter, From Film Director to Patent Holder” on its official YouTube channel. During the interview, Goo Hye-sun opened up about an aspect of her career that she had largely kept private: her work as a music composer.
“I have a lot of music copyrights,” Goo Hye-sun said. “Rather than having copyrights because I’m an actress, I have quite a few music copyrights. I’ve been secretly working as a composer.”
Goo Hye-sun explained that she has been composing New Age music for around 20 years and has registered approximately 58 songs to date. Although many of her compositions are not widely known to the public, she said some have been used as background music on television variety shows.
Her music is also played in places such as cafés and hospitals, where background music without vocals is often needed. “So even though it’s not a large amount of money, I continue to receive copyright royalties,” Goo Hye-sun said.
She added that she has been actively registering her creative works and protecting them through the copyright system, viewing the process as an investment in her future as well as a source of personal fulfillment. “If I register many things under copyright and have them protected by the system, I think that when I’m older, beyond the money, there will be a sense of spiritual richness in thinking, ‘This is intellectual property that I created,’” she explained.
Goo Hye-sun has built a diverse career across multiple creative fields. After graduating from Sungkyunkwan University’s Department of Film, TV and Multimedia, she went on to pursue graduate studies at KAIST.
