Condition of Actress Born in 1997 Who Spent 3 Months in a Coma and Suffered Partial Paralysis After Cerebral Hypoxia
Chinese actress Xiao Yanni returns to acting after spending three months in a coma and undergoing years of rehabilitation following cerebral hypoxia.
Chinese actress Xiao Yanni, born in 1997, graduated from the Beijing Film Academy and has a strong background in ballet. She was once known as a workaholic. Determined to establish herself in the fiercely competitive entertainment industry, she would reportedly drink three to four cups of black coffee a day to force herself to stay awake during filming, constantly telling herself, “I’m about to become famous.” However, just as her career was beginning to gain momentum, her life took an unexpected turn.
In September 2021, she suddenly found herself unable to move after waking up. After being rushed to the hospital, the actress was diagnosed with cerebral hypoxia, a condition involving insufficient oxygen supply to the brain. She subsequently fell into a coma and entered a vegetative state.

Three months later, in 2022, the actress unexpectedly regained consciousness. Her family regarded her awakening as nothing short of a miracle. However, the reality she faced afterward was extremely difficult: the left side of her body was paralyzed and beyond her control, while her left hand was almost completely unable to move. She had to relearn even the most basic daily activities from scratch, forcing her rising acting career to come to an abrupt halt.
With remarkable determination, Xiao Yanni underwent four years of rehabilitation. By April 2025, she was finally able to walk independently again. It was not until late 2025 that she gradually regained the ability to take care of herself, including dressing, bathing, and eating without assistance. According to Xiao Yanni, the progress she has made would not have been possible without the devoted care of her parents throughout the most difficult period of her illness.

On September 19, Xiao Yanni drew attention after announcing her return to the entertainment industry. The actress revealed that she had returned to Hengdian to search for acting opportunities. Once there, she was stunned to discover that many people in the industry had even assumed she had died. With her comeback, the Gen Z actress said there was one simple message she wanted people to hear: “I’m still alive. I’m back.”
On the first day of her return, Xiao Yanni said she visited as many as eight production crews in search of work. However, at the very first production she approached, she was confronted with skeptical remarks such as, “You’re this sick and you still want to act?” and “Why don’t you just quit?” Asked whether the harsh comments hurt her, Xiao Yanni calmly explained that she had already prepared herself mentally. “It’s normal! Before I went there, I already knew they would say things like that, so I was prepared for it. Besides, it’s understandable that they would doubt me because my condition really is what it is.”

Ultimately, her refusal to give up paid off, and Xiao Yanni secured two roles in short-form productions. Before falling ill, she reportedly earned around 10,000 yuan per day, but after her return, her daily pay had dropped to just 800 yuan. Despite the dramatic decrease, Xiao Yanni said she remains grateful for every opportunity to stand in front of the camera again.
The actress candidly shared that only when she returns to the spotlight does she truly feel that she is “really alive.” She also hopes to once again earn money through her own efforts, allowing her to ease some of the financial and everyday burdens carried by her parents.

Born in 1997, Xiao Yanni has been nicknamed “Little Ni Ni” in the Chinese entertainment industry because of her resemblance to actress Ni Ni. She previously appeared in productions including Your Highness, the Class Monitor, The Journey, and The Forbidden City Maze.
