BTS is continuing to make history across North America as the K-pop group’s ongoing ARIRANG world tour brings unprecedented attention from local governments and communities.
Ahead of their upcoming concerts in Toronto, city officials have proposed naming part of a Toronto street “BTS Boulevard.” Meanwhile, Maryland Governor Wes Moore personally welcomed all seven BTS members in a social media video ahead of the group’s appearance in Baltimore. The developments highlight the scale of BTS’ influence beyond music, with the group receiving official recognition from local governments during their North American tour.
BTS is scheduled to perform at Rogers Stadium in Toronto on August 22 and 23 local time as part of their ARIRANG world tour. Ahead of the concerts, Toronto City Council recently considered and approved a proposal to temporarily designate part of a city street as “BTS Boulevard.” The proposed designation would reportedly remain in effect from August 21 through September 23, covering the period surrounding BTS’ Toronto concerts.
The city council is also set to request that the city officially declare August 22 and 23 as “BTS Weekend” in connection with the group’s concerts. The proposed street naming and commemorative weekend reflect the scale of anticipation surrounding BTS’ return to the Canadian city.
BTS has also received a special welcome from Maryland Governor Wes Moore. In a video posted on social media, Moore praised the group’s ability to bring people together across cultural, regional and linguistic boundaries. He highlighted the idea of seven people coming together around a single goal and described their ability to connect different communities as something remarkable.
The governor also included Korean subtitles in the video, further emphasizing the message to BTS’ Korean-speaking fans. Moore then individually called out the names of all seven members RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, V and Jung Kook before welcoming BTS to Baltimore. “Welcome to Baltimore,” he said, also calling on all BTS ARMYs to make some noise.
The official recognition in Toronto and Maryland demonstrates how BTS’ ARIRANG tour is developing into more than a series of concerts.
