Edison Chen Calls Himself “Handsome” at 46 Despite Being Compared to Zhao Benshan
Edison Chen says he remains confident in his looks at 46, embracing the natural aging process as he prepares to return to acting after years away from the entertainment industry.
On September 13, Edison Chen attended a promotional event and answered questions about changes to his appearance. Responding to comments that he had “lost his looks,” “let himself go,” or looked like a “Zhao Benshan lookalike,” the actor said, “Being handsome is an attitude, not an appearance. So I think I’m always very handsome because I’ve always had a very confident mindset.”
Edison Chen said he has never undergone any medical cosmetic procedures and has never deliberately tried to fight the aging process. Instead, he calmly embraces the changes that come with getting older. He believes that people naturally age over the years and that this is simply a law of nature, making one’s most authentic, unaltered state the most valuable.
During a livestream, Edison Chen revealed that he will soon travel to Malaysia to film a movie, marking his return to acting after being away from the profession for many years. His long hair, scruffy beard, and rugged appearance were deliberately created for his new character.
Edison Chen happily shared that his daughter really likes his current style, so he may even keep the look after filming wraps.
Following Edison Chen’s comments, viewers engaged in lively discussions. On Weibo, many people wrote, “Even an old Ferrari is still a Ferrari,” “Don’t grow a mustache! You’d look better clean-shaven,” and “You’ve lost the handsomeness you used to have. Stop making excuses.”
Born in Canada in 1980, Edison Chen has one-eighth Portuguese ancestry and is an actor, singer, and fashion designer. He once enjoyed a highly successful career in Hong Kong, appearing in numerous film projects. In 2006, Edison Chen even beat out famous actors such as Louis Koo, Daniel Wu, and Nicholas Tse to be named Hong Kong’s “Most Handsome Young Star.” However, following a scandal involving the leaked intimate photos of several female celebrities, Edison Chen announced his departure from the entertainment industry.
He is married to supermodel Qin Shupei, who previously appeared in Victoria’s Secret’s lingerie show in 2012. The couple welcomed a daughter in 2017 and currently live in a $2.85 million home in Los Angeles, United States.
