A past account from singer Sung Hyun-woo, who appeared on Produce 101 Season 2, has resurfaced following recent developments involving missing persons in Jeju.
In February, Sung Hyun-woo shared a video on his personal channel titled “The Time I Almost Got Murdered on a Trip to Jeju, 100% True Story,” in which he recounted an alleged confrontation with a man carrying a weapon in 2021.
Sung Hyun-woo said he had originally kept the story away from television and radio because he was afraid that the person involved might identify him and track him down. After several years had passed, he decided to speak publicly about what happened.
According to Sung Hyun-woo’s account, he was visiting Jeju to find inspiration for his music when he witnessed an intoxicated middle-aged man verbally abusing a foreign employee at a restaurant near his accommodation.
Sung Hyun-woo said he intervened, telling the man that he was also a customer and wanted to eat peacefully. Although the restaurant owner eventually removed the man from the premises, Sung Hyun-woo claimed the confrontation did not end there.
After finishing his meal and leaving the restaurant, he allegedly found the man waiting outside. Sung Hyun-woo recalled that the man approached him, asked whether he was good at fighting, and then pulled out what appeared to be a large knife from behind his back.
“I had no choice but to run,” Sung Hyun-woo said, describing how he fled in the opposite direction from the restaurant. He claimed that when he looked back, the man was chasing him while holding the weapon. Sung Hyun-woo eventually hid in an alley near his accommodation and managed to escape the man.
After returning to his accommodation, Sung Hyun-woo said he reported the incident to police. He recalled being told that such threats involving knives were not uncommon in some coastal areas of Jeju and that he should be cautious.
Several months later, Sung Hyun-woo said he received a notification informing him that the man had been sentenced in connection with a special intimidation case. The experience reportedly made him realize how dangerous the situation could have become. “If I hadn’t run away and had tried to fight him, I really could have died, ” Sung Hyun-woo said, reflecting on the incident.
Following the video’s release, some viewers questioned whether the incident had actually occurred. In response, Sung Hyun-woo reportedly shared part of a case inquiry screen. The information shown identified the case as special intimidation and indicated that the prosecutor’s disposition had been completed.
His past story has now attracted renewed attention amid reports of suspected human remains being discovered in Jeju following missing-person cases. However, the circumstances of the recent cases are separate from Sung Hyun-woo’s 2021 account, and there is no reported connection between the singer’s past incident and the recent missing-person cases.
Sung Hyun-woo appeared on Mnet’s Produce 101 Season 2 in 2017. He later debuted as a member of the boy group LIMITLESS before continuing his career as a solo artist.
His account of the alleged Jeju incident has resurfaced primarily because of the timing of recent news from the island, bringing renewed attention to a story he had previously shared months ago.
