A uniquely Japanese-style apology by volleyball star Yuji Nishida is currently going viral online, after he turned an unexpected on-court accident into a moment that delighted millions of viewers. What began as a simple serving error quickly became a memorable “performance” that showcased both his personality and sportsmanship.
The incident took place during a volleyball All-Star fan event held in Kobe, Japan. During a mid-event serving challenge, Nishida—one of Japan’s most famous volleyball players—attempted a powerful left-handed serve. Unfortunately, the ball veered off course and struck a young ball girl standing outside the court.
Realizing immediately what had happened, the 1.86-meter-tall opposite hitter looked visibly shocked and remorseful. Instead of offering a routine apology, the 26-year-old athlete surprised everyone with an improvised gesture that sent the entire arena into laughter. Nishida suddenly took a running start and dramatically slid across the court floor toward the referee’s stand. Lying flat on his stomach, arms pressed close to his body and head lowered, he humorously reenacted an exaggerated version of a traditional Japanese formal apology.

The moment didn’t end there. After sliding to the ball girl’s position, Nishida went down on his knees and repeatedly bowed until his forehead nearly touched the floor, expressing deep remorse in an over-the-top yet endearing way. The crowd erupted in cheers and applause, clearly touched by the sincerity and charm of his actions. Soon after, clips of the moment began circulating on social media, quickly amassing millions of views.
Even television commentators couldn’t hide their amusement. One jokingly compared Nishida’s sliding motion to “a tuna being pulled onto land,” while another praised his quick thinking and respectful response to the situation.
What could have been an awkward accident instead became a viral highlight, with fans praising Yuji Nishida for transforming a simple mistake into a moment of humor, humility, and cultural charm—once again proving why he is so beloved both on and off the court.
