Netflix has said that the release date for Cha Eun Woo’s superhero comedy “The WONDERfools” is still being discussed, after reports claimed the show had locked in a specific May premiere despite his ongoing tax evasion scandal.
A recent Korean report stated that the Netflix original would premiere globally on May 15, 2026, and that the team was already coordinating preview content and mid‑May press events with the cast.
The article also suggested that earlier talks about adjusting the schedule due to the investigation had ended with a firm decision to keep the May date. In response, Netflix clarified that “The WONDERfools” is only set broadly for a second‑quarter 2026 launch and that no exact day has been fixed, according to allkpop.
The company emphasized that there have been no official changes to the overall plan but said the final premiere date and promotional schedule remain undecided. A representative noted that, with more than three months to go, event details such as a press conference timetable are still being worked out. This leaves room for possible adjustments as the situation around Cha Eun Woo develops.
“The WONDERfools” is a Korean fantasy comedy set in 1999, following ordinary residents of Haeseong City who gain flawed superpowers and are pushed into confronting a local villain, Netflix reported.
Park Eun Bin plays Eun Chae Ni, a struggling woman whose life changes after an unexpected accident, while Cha Eun Woo appears as a strict but awkward civil servant who helps investigate a series of disappearances. The drama has been promoted as part of Netflix’s 2026 K‑content lineup, highlighting its nostalgic setting and ensemble cast.
Interest in the show has intensified since Cha Eun Woo was accused of being involved in a tax evasion scheme linked to a company reportedly set up by his mother, with authorities estimating more than 20 billion won in unpaid taxes and penalties.
His agency has asked for a review of the tax office’s findings and insists the case is still under examination, pledging full cooperation with investigators. For now, Netflix is keeping its commitment to a second‑quarter 2026 release while leaving the exact date open as discussions continue, as per chosun.
