Attorney Go Sang Rok of Law Firm Pil released a statement on October 4, explaining that the couple photo Kim Sae Ron briefly uploaded and deleted on social media during the airing of Queen of Tears was in fact taken in February 2020, when both parties were adults. “The photo in question, along with adjacent images on Kim Soo Hyun’s iPad, confirmed it was captured between February 18 and 23, 2020, during Kim Sae Ron’s sophomore year in college,” Go said, adding that the device had been submitted to investigators to prove authenticity.
Go also addressed a controversial draft statement found in KakaoTalk messages Kim Sae Ron had shared with a friend in March 2024. “The draft falsely claimed the photo was taken in 2016, when she was in high school, and was used to support an untrue narrative that she dated Kim Soo Hyun from middle school through her university years,” he explained. Go emphasized that Kim Sae Ron never intended to release this draft publicly, pointing out that its immediate exposure would have revealed the falsehood.
He criticized YouTube channel Garo Sero Research Institute for broadcasting the draft without proper verification, calling it a “serious breach of duty to fact-check.”
Kim Soo Hyun has been embroiled in rumors since March, facing allegations that he dated Kim Sae Ron as a minor. He strongly denied the claims in a press conference, calling evidence presented by her family “doctored” and even labeling leaked recordings as “AI-generated forgeries.” The actor filed a ₩12 billion ($88 million) damages lawsuit against both the bereaved family and online broadcasters who spread the accusations.
Go concluded by reaffirming, “It is a clear fact that Kim Soo Hyun never dated the late Kim Sae Ron during her underage years. Despite this, malicious comments continue. Secondary victimization under the guise of criticizing his timing or motives must stop.”
