On October 4, legal sources confirmed that Hwang Jung Eum chose not to submit an appeal after being sentenced to two years in prison with four years of probation for embezzling ₩4.34 billion KRW from Hunminjeongeum Entertainment, a company in which she held 100% ownership.
The Jeju District Court had previously handed down the ruling on September 25, citing violations of the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes (embezzlement). With prosecutors also choosing not to appeal, the verdict from the first trial is now final.
Regarding this, an official from Hwang’s agency, Y1 Entertainment, told Xports News on October 4: “Actress Hwang Jung Eum respects the court’s decision and sincerely apologizes once again for causing concern to her fans and the public. She will strive to return as a more mature and responsible actress.”
The case traces back to July 2022, when Hwang borrowed ₩800 million under Hunminjeongeum Entertainment’s name and later transferred ₩700 million from the company account into her personal account, investing in cryptocurrency under the pretext of provisional payments. Between July and October 2022, she repeated similar transactions 13 times, ultimately funneling over ₩4.2 billion of company funds into cryptocurrency investments.
Hwang has fully repaid the damages and admitted to all charges in court. During her first trial sentencing, she tearfully apologized, stating she was sorry for the trouble caused.
