Disney+’s upcoming original series The Remarried Empress is embroiled in controversy after a costume worn by lead actor Ju Ji Hoon appeared to feature a medal resembling a Nazi-era German decoration. The production studio has issued a formal apology.
On November 15, Studio N, the production company behind the series, released an official statement acknowledging the issue: “We sincerely apologize for the discomfort caused by our failure to thoroughly vet a specific costume prop that was recently revealed.” The company added, “The production team recognizes the seriousness of this matter and will proceed with a careful and thorough follow-up, including replacing the published images and taking steps to prevent recurrence.”

The controversy began after Disney+ Originals Preview 2025, an official showcase held in Hong Kong on November 13, where first-look stills from The Remarried Empress were revealed. Online communities, particularly on platform X (formerly Twitter), soon pointed out that a medal featured on Ju Ji Hoon’s costume bore a striking resemblance to the Third Class Gold Cross of the German Nazi regime, which featured the Iron Cross shape, gold and white color scheme, and red ribbon.
Netizens provided side-by-side comparisons of the prop medal and the historical Nazi decoration, highlighting similarities that drew widespread criticism. In response, Studio N admitted their oversight in the prop inspection process and promised corrective measures. However, it remains undecided whether the scenes involving the controversial prop will be re-filmed or digitally edited to remove the item.

The Remarried Empress is a fantasy romance drama adapted from a popular web novel of the same name. The story is set in the fictional Eastern Empire and follows Empress Navier (played by Shin Min Ah), who, after being betrayed by Emperor Sovieshu (Ju Ji Hoon) who falls for a runaway slave Rashta (played by Lee Se Young), demands a remarriage to Prince Heinrey (played by Lee Jong Suk) from the Western Kingdom. The series is known for its unique worldbuilding, featuring imperial politics, extravagant balls, and elaborate costumes with uniforms and dresses that reflect its alternate universe.
The show is expected to debut on Disney+ in 2026.
