At the 2025 MAMA Awards held in Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Stadium, legendary actor Chow Yun-fat moved audiences with an emotional tribute to victims of the tragic Tai Po fire. The ceremony, usually a dazzling celebration of K-pop’s biggest acts, was notably toned down this year in light of the devastating blaze that claimed at least 128 lives.

Before presenting the Artist of the Year award, Chow solemnly addressed the crowd: “I ask everyone to stand in silence to offer support and heartfelt condolences to the residents of Tai Po.” As the audience stood for a moment of silence, Chow’s voice trembled, and he paused, overcome with emotion. He added, “To all those who lost loved ones, I extend my deepest sympathies.”
This touching moment underscored the broader tone of the evening, which focused more on healing and solidarity than spectacle. CJ ENM, the event’s organizer, stated that the show was intentionally scaled back to reflect respect for the victims, explaining: “We believe in the healing and unifying power of music.”

Following the tribute, Chow Yun-fat presented the Artist of the Year award to G-Dragon, who also swept two other categories. G-Dragon, visibly moved, said, “To receive this from my lifelong hero is a true honor. Today is both joyful and heartbreaking.”

Meanwhile, Stray Kids took home the Album of the Year for their record KARMA. The group delivered an emotional speech: “The path we’ve walked hasn’t been easy. There were many crossroads and choices. Thanks to our fans for standing by us.”
In a break from tradition, performers donned darker, subdued attire in a nod to the somber atmosphere. The award show, while still celebrating K-pop achievements, became a meaningful platform for empathy, resilience, and collective mourning.

Ultimately, the 2025 MAMA Awards will be remembered not only for its winners but for standing as a testament to the power of music to bring comfort and connection during times of tragedy.
