Jisoo returns with a new project after a year with the Netflix series Boyfriend on Demand, which was released on March 6. The romantic comedy follows a webtoon producer named Mirae (played by Jisoo) who is exhausted by real life and turns to a virtual dating simulation where she can subscribe to and experience romance.

The project has already attracted global attention simply due to Jisoo’s involvement. As the first Netflix series starring a member of BLACKPINK, the drama has generated significant anticipation among international fans. The romantic comedy genre, which has long been loved by many viewers of Korean dramas, also raised expectations for strong results.
However, critics say lead actress Jisoo continues to show the same shortcomings that appeared in her previous works. Although she has now spent six years being called an “actress,” her overall acting ability is said to have changed little.

One of the most frequently mentioned issues has been her vocal delivery. Jisoo’s distinctive nasal tone and somewhat constrained speech style make it difficult for her to naturally carry the rhythm of scenes. At the same time, critics say it is difficult to find moments of particularly powerful acting that could compensate for these weaknesses. Her delivery of the lively dialogue typical of romantic comedies is sometimes considered awkward, and she does not fully utilize physical comedy when scenes require it. As a result, some viewers feel that gaps in performance are often filled mainly by her visual appeal.

Boyfriend on Demand is largely centered on Jisoo’s character. The 10-episode series follows her journey alongside multiple “boyfriends” in the virtual dating simulation, meaning that she carries most of the drama’s screen time. Because of this, any perceived limitations in her acting ability can become even more noticeable.
Jisoo first stepped into acting in 2021. She later attempted a genre project with the drama Newtopia, released on Coupang Play, and now presents her third leading drama with Boyfriend on Demand. Despite ongoing concerns about her acting skills, she continues to meet global audiences through new projects.

Director Kim Jung-sik, who helmed Boyfriend on Demand, expressed confidence in the star. “Jisoo worked incredibly hard,” he said. “She handled many different settings and characters well. You’ll see the character Mirae grow in the drama, and you will also see actress Jisoo grow. Effort can overcome talent.”
Jisoo herself also addressed her approach to the role. “Because I take on various roles, I met with the director to discuss how I could show a better side this time,” she said. “Since I’m playing a character around my own age, I researched ways to portray her more effectively. I hope people will say that I met a character that fits me perfectly.”
