Actors Lee Jae-in and Hong Kyung have been selected as the leads for the upcoming apocalyptic thriller film “Concrete Market,” bringing intense chemistry to a post-disaster survival narrative set within a devastated urban landscape.
The film, directed by Hong Ki-won, unfolds in the aftermath of a catastrophic earthquake that leaves most of Seoul in ruins. Within this desolate environment, a single apartment complex stands as the sole survivor, transforming into an unlikely marketplace where residents engage in barter to sustain themselves. The story centers on the emergence of tension and power struggles among survivors competing for resources and dominance within this isolated community.
Lee Jae-in portrays Choi Hee-ro, a mysterious newcomer whose unexpected arrival disrupts the precarious balance maintained within the market. Her character projects a quiet menace through a cold demeanor and composed expression, introducing an element of unpredictability that destabilizes the established order.
Hong Kyung takes on the role of Kim Tae-jin, serving as the devoted associate to the marketplace’s leader, Park Sang-yong. The character embodies a conflicted nature, marked by his ruthless conduct alongside deeper internal struggles, presenting layers of complexity through rebellious energy and raw emotional intensity.
The supporting cast features accomplished ensemble members, including Jung Man-sik in the role of Park Sang-yong, the marketplace leader, Yoo Su-bin as Park Chul-min (Tae-jin’s rival), Kim Guk-hee as Mi-sun, and Choi Jung-woon as Se-hee. This ensemble composition aims to create multifaceted dynamics within the confined setting of the marketplace community.
“Concrete Market” originated as a planned drama series involving seven episodes but was ultimately restructured into a theatrical feature film. The project began filming in November 2021 and has since completed production, though its release was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and other logistical factors. The decision to prioritize theatrical distribution over streaming platforms was finalized after initial speculation about an OTT release.
Climax Studio, the production company behind the 2023 blockbuster “Concrete Utopia,” which drew 3.84 million viewers, returns to oversee production of “Concrete Market,” bringing substantial experience in disaster-centered storytelling. Lotte Entertainment, which previously managed investment and distribution for “Concrete Utopia,” similarly supports this project.
The film is scheduled for theatrical release on December 3, with the Korea Media Rating Board currently reviewing the submission to determine its rating classification.
