A famous dancer and choreographer was sentenced to three years in prison and taken into custody for sexually assaulting an intoxicated acquaintance.
According to media reports on November 1st, the Criminal Division 11 of the Seoul Western District Court sentenced Mr. A to three years in prison on the 23rd of last month on charges of quasi-rape. He was also ordered to complete 80 hours of a sexual violence treatment program and was banned from working in institutions related to children, adolescents, and persons with disabilities for five years.
Mr. A previously appeared on a dance competition program on a music channel and worked as a choreographer for a famous boy group.
Earlier, in March 2024, Mr. A was brought to trial on charges of sexually assaulting a woman he had known for a long time in a motel in Seodaemun District after drinking together.
Mr. A admitted to the sexual relations himself but claimed the victim was not incapacitated and that the encounter was consensual. However, the court pointed out that Mr. A contradicted or subtly changed his statements after being presented with objective evidence. In contrast, the court found the victim’s testimony consistent, reasonable, and supported by objective evidence, thus deeming it credible.
The court explained the sentencing by stating, “The defendant persistently encouraged the victim to drink despite her reluctance, and exploited her intoxicated and incapacitated state to commit the crime, reflecting the seriousness of the offense. Denying the crime and shifting blame onto the victim also exacerbated her mental suffering.”
Mr. A has appealed the first-instance verdict.
