With its first season officially set to run for 12 episodes in Fall 2026, Overgeared is generating excitement among anime fans. But can this highly anticipated adaptation truly become the next Solo Leveling, or does it have more in common with Shangri-La Frontier?
The Fall 2026 anime season has introduced several exciting adaptations, but one newcomer has attracted particular attention because of its connection to the growing popularity of Korean webcomics. As comparisons with Solo Leveling continue to circulate, fans are wondering whether this new series has what it takes to follow in the footsteps of the global anime phenomenon.
Solo Leveling helped bring Korean webcomic adaptations into the international anime spotlight, achieving a level of recognition that many competing titles have struggled to match. Overgeared has long been considered another promising adaptation, and recent Blu-ray and DVD release information from Japan has now revealed the episode count for its debut season.

According to Japanese retailer listings, Overgeared will consist of 12 episodes, distributed across two Blu-ray/DVD volumes. Although additional seasons remain possible, the currently announced release indicates that the anime’s first season will run for a single cour during Fall 2026.
Since its announcement, Overgeared has frequently been compared to major anime hits such as Solo Leveling. However, despite their shared Korean webcomic origins and game-inspired elements, the two series offer noticeably different experiences.
Overgeared takes place in a world where virtual reality gaming has become so influential that achievements inside a game can translate into wealth and social status in real life. Unlike Solo Leveling, however, the stakes are not necessarily life-threatening. Its protagonist, Grid, is essentially a gamer determined to level up and succeed by any means available, including exploiting game mechanics, loopholes, and clever tricks to gain an advantage.
For that reason, Overgeared may actually have more in common with Katarina’s Shangri-La Frontier, which is preparing to return with another season next year, than with Solo Leveling.
Fans who enjoy Shangri-La Frontier’s approach to virtual reality gaming may find plenty to appreciate in Overgeared. Shangri-La Frontier follows Sunraku, a passionate gamer who pushes game mechanics to their limits while exploring the intricate relationships between character statistics, equipment, and combat strategies. Overgeared adopts a similarly detailed approach as Grid struggles through the game’s early stages, relying on unconventional tactics and quick thinking to improve his position while pursuing fame and fortune in the real world.
One of Overgeared’s most distinctive features is Grid himself. Unlike the typical noble or selfless anime protagonist, Grid has a selfish, opportunistic, and occasionally unpleasant personality, creating opportunities for comedy and unexpected character development. His unusual approach to gaming could make the series an entertaining addition to the Fall 2026 lineup. With a substantial amount of original webcomic material still available for adaptation, there is also plenty of potential for future seasons, although no continuation has been confirmed.
