On August 26, Disney+ released the first teaser for the upcoming original series The Remarried Empress, starring Shin Min-ah, Ju Ji-hoon, Lee Jong-suk and Lee Se-young.
Based on the globally popular webtoon of the same name, the series is attempting to bring a distinctly K-romance fantasy style to live-action television. However, while the elaborate costumes and royal setting have sparked anticipation, the teaser’s deliberately theatrical dialogue has also raised questions about whether the webtoon’s unique tone will translate smoothly to the screen.
The teaser opens with sweeping views of the fictional Dongdae Empire before introducing Empress Navier, played by Shin Min-ah. Her husband, Emperor Sovieshu (Joo Ji-hoon), appears devoted to her, declaring: “No matter what happens, you are the only woman who will be my wife.”
But his promise does not last long. The arrival of Rashta (Lee Se-young) quickly disrupts the seemingly perfect imperial marriage. In one particularly striking scene, a woman sharing an intimate moment with Sovieshu initially appears to be Navier. The camera then reveals that it is actually Rashta. Sovieshu embraces her and whispers, “I missed you, Rashta,” making it clear that his earlier vow to Navier has already been broken.
As Sovieshu becomes increasingly drawn to Rashta, Navier watches her husband’s transformation without sacrificing her dignity as empress. The dynamic takes another turn with the arrival of Heinrey, played by Lee Jong-suk.
Upon meeting Navier, Heinrey greets her with the theatrical line: “It is an honor to meet you, my queen.” The brief exchange sets up the complicated relationship between the four central characters.
With Sovieshu, Rashta, Navier and Heinrey becoming increasingly entangled, the teaser hints at a dramatic royal love triangle or rather, a much more complicated imperial relationship.
One of the most distinctive aspects of the teaser is its deliberately heightened tone. The series features lavish Western-inspired royal settings, extravagant costumes, fictional empires and dramatic titles such as empress, emperor and prince. That aesthetic closely reflects the fantasy world established by the original webtoon.
However, dialogue such as “My queen” and “I request approval for my remarriage” can sound considerably more theatrical when delivered by live actors than when read in a webtoon. For fans of the original, this may be exactly what makes the adaptation appealing. For other viewers, however, the heightened delivery could potentially feel unfamiliar or even unintentionally awkward.
As a result, The Remarried Empress may face an unusual challenge: remaining faithful to the webtoon’s distinctive fantasy tone without making the live-action version feel overly theatrical.
The Remarried Empress follows Navier, the seemingly perfect empress of the Dongdae Empire. Her carefully controlled life changes when Emperor Sovieshu falls for Rashta, a runaway slave, and announces his intention to divorce Navier. Rather than simply accepting the divorce, Navier makes an unexpected request: she asks for permission to remarry Heinrey, the prince of the Western Kingdom. What begins as an imperial divorce develops into a complicated story of romance, political power, betrayal and revenge.
The original webtoon has reportedly accumulated 2.97 billion global views, making the live-action adaptation one of the more highly anticipated Korean fantasy series.
Unlike many contemporary Korean dramas grounded in realistic settings, The Remarried Empress fully embraces its fictional imperial world. Its combination of royal intrigue, romance, fantasy and melodrama could potentially introduce a new visual and narrative style to Korean television.
At the same time, that distinctive identity may prove to be its biggest challenge. Whether audiences embrace lines like “My queen” as part of the show’s charm or find them too theatrical could ultimately determine how viewers respond to the adaptation.
For now, The Remarried Empress is already attracting considerable attention thanks to its star-studded cast, elaborate production design and enormously popular source material.
