Actress Zhou Dongyu and actors Chen Minghao and Duan Yihong are facing intense criticism following their performances in the stage play Wencheng, which is part of the Aranya Theatre Festival 2026 in Hebei Province, China.
According to QQ, many audience members have demanded refunds, arguing that the production’s quality was far below expectations. Viewers accused the cast of being unprofessional, failing to memorize their lines, relying heavily on teleprompters, and delivering performances that did not justify the expensive ticket prices.
The Controversial Performance
During the performance, all three actors reportedly carried scripts on stage and frequently read their lines in a hesitant manner.
Zhou Dongyu drew particular criticism for unclear pronunciation and even misreading certain lines. At one point, she reportedly laughed and casually remarked, “I read that part wrong.” Audience members also complained that her delivery lacked emotion, making it difficult to understand the story and characters.
Even respected veteran actors Duan Yihong and Chen Minghao were seen relying on teleprompters because they had not fully memorized the script. Chen Minghao reportedly stated, “I’m the director. I don’t need to memorize the lines.”

According to QQ, tickets for four consecutive performances featuring Zhou Dongyu sold out, with prices ranging from 480 yuan to 880 yuan. However, after the first show, numerous audience members publicly demanded refunds, saying they could not accept this experimental style of performance.
Following the backlash, Chen Minghao, who also serves as the play’s director, explained in media interviews that actors were not required to memorize the script before taking the stage. He noted that the production belongs to an experimental theater genre that allows performers to carry scripts as part of a new artistic expression.
However, the public has shown little appreciation for the experiment.
Many argued that memorizing lines is a basic requirement for actors and that performers should focus on expressing emotions, refining body language, and delivering dialogue naturally rather than simply reading from a script. Critics described the approach as lacking professionalism and showing insufficient respect for the stage.
The actors’ dependence on teleprompters also became a major source of criticism. Audience members argued that such devices should only serve as emergency backup tools, not become essential supports throughout an entire performance.
Across Chinese social media platforms, viewers expressed anger at paying substantial ticket prices only to witness what they described as careless performances and weak acting skills.

Zhou Dongyu’s Reputation Faces Further Decline
Among the three performers, Zhou Dongyu has become the primary target of criticism due to what many viewers described as a careless and indifferent attitude during the performance.
Audience members claimed that after finishing her lines, Zhou would lean against a table and drink water rather than remain immersed in her character. Some also argued that she appeared disconnected from both the script and the role she was portraying.
Several scenes reportedly required the actress to dance, but viewers criticized both the choreography and her performance, describing them as awkward and difficult to understand.
This is not the first time Zhou Dongyu has been accused of lacking professionalism.
At the 2023 Golden Rooster Awards, the actress was criticized for her behavior while presenting an award. Some viewers felt she showed insufficient respect toward veteran actor Ge You and relied heavily on prepared notes to read simple introductory remarks.

Critics have also pointed out that Zhou frequently depends on scripts or teleprompters during public appearances. They argue that she often appears nervous, struggles to react spontaneously, and lacks fluency in her speech.
As a result, some members of the public have called on entertainment authorities to establish stricter professional standards for actors. Some even suggested penalties, including temporary performance bans, for performers who fail to memorize lines or demonstrate inadequate professional skills.
According to Sina, Zhou Dongyu’s public reputation has reached one of its lowest points in the past five years.
Although she remains the youngest actress to achieve the prestigious “Three Golden Best Actress” milestone by winning Best Actress honors at the Golden Rooster Awards, Golden Horse Awards, and Hong Kong Film Awards, her acting ability continues to be questioned by many viewers.
Some critics argue that her achievements have been exaggerated and that she benefited from fortunate circumstances and industry support rather than exceptional talent.
Since 2023, Zhou Dongyu has experienced a series of disappointing film projects. In 2024, she released only one work, which failed to generate significant attention. Reports indicate that since 2025, the actress has not secured any major new projects.
Industry observers believe Zhou currently faces a difficult situation. Her youthful appearance limits opportunities to play more mature characters, while her petite frame makes it challenging to portray glamorous leading women or highly accomplished professional figures. Critics argue that even roles such as police officers or lawyers do not suit her image.
At the same time, the art-house films that align more closely with her strengths typically attract smaller audiences and generate lower box-office revenue, further complicating her career prospects.
