Renowned anime director Tsutomu Shibayama, best known for his work on Doraemon, has passed away.
The news was officially announced on March 17 through the social media channels of Ajiado Animation Works, where Shibayama previously served as president.
According to the statement, “Our former president, Tsutomu Shibayama, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2026, due to lung cancer.” He was 84 years old.

The company added, “Shibayama dedicated more than 20 years to directing both the TV series and theatrical films of Doraemon, and also served as chief director for the TV anime Nintama Rantaro. We express our deepest gratitude for his lifelong contributions and respectfully share this news.”
Born on March 9, 1941, Shibayama built a long and influential career as an animation director, storyboard artist, and animator. In addition to Doraemon, he contributed to beloved works such as Makoto-chan, Nintama Rantaro, and Mighty Cat Masked Niyandar, leaving a lasting mark on generations of anime fans worldwide.
