The first night of MAMA 2025 began on November 28 at Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong, celebrating music industry achievements with performances and award presentations. The second night follows on November 29, featuring more major stars.
However, the event takes place under somber circumstances. Just days earlier, a catastrophic fire in Hong Kong’s Tai Po area claimed at least 128 lives, with over 200 missing. After emergency discussions, organizers opted to proceed with MAMA 2025 but with a scaled-back, more solemn format to express solidarity with the grieving public.

From November 25 to 28, celebrities and staff flew into Hong Kong. Organizers strictly instructed artists not to show excessive excitement or smiles at the airport to avoid seeming insensitive amidst the city’s mourning.
Red carpet appearances were canceled, with only the awards and live stages retained. Pyrotechnics and fire effects were entirely removed, and some idol groups even modified their outfits to better match the respectful tone.

Following Day 1, Chinese social media erupted with news that MAMA had removed artist seating altogether. Artists would only appear in the audience area briefly—just to walk up and accept their awards. As a result, all candid “reaction” moments, which fans have long cherished, were eliminated. Winners now appear directly from backstage, making surprise announcements and fun interactions—a hallmark of MAMA—virtually non-existent.
This change was implemented to avoid any backlash over facial expressions or over-the-top reactions that might be seen as disrespectful during a national mourning period.

While many fans expressed understanding and support for the decision, recognizing it as a necessary move to preserve decorum, others voiced disappointment. For years, spontaneous artist reactions, whether caught by cameramen or fancams, have been beloved highlights of the show—fueling fan excitement and engagement across social media.
Some netizens also wondered if further restrictions might be announced for Day 2. For now, MAMA 2025 continues under exceptional circumstances, balancing tribute with celebration.
