33-year-old actor Gaku Sano suffered a serious injury during the filming of TBS’s popular sports variety show The Ultimate Sportsman 2025 Winter ( 最強運動男子頂上對決2025冬 ). According to reports, the incident occurred on November 18 while Sano was attempting the show’s iconic “Monster Box” challenge—a vaulting event requiring athletes to leap over stacked boxes.

Sano successfully cleared an astounding height of 17 levels—approximately 2.46 meters (8 feet) —but lost balance mid-air and landed awkwardly, severely twisting his right leg. He immediately expressed pain on set and was rushed to the hospital on the advice of on-site medical staff.
Medical examinations later revealed meniscus damage and a torn ligament in his right knee. He will require surgery and a full recovery period estimated at 8 to 9 months. Currently, Sano is reliant on crutches for mobility.
TBS issued an official statement on November 20, confirming the incident and apologizing publicly. “Although safety measures and emergency personnel were in place, we regret this unfortunate accident. We deeply sympathize with Mr. Sano and will be conducting a thorough review of our safety protocols.”

Despite the injury, Sano has expressed his desire to continue working. However, his agency clarified that any physically demanding acting roles will be evaluated based on his recovery progress and medical advice.
Known for his athleticism, Gaku Sano is often dubbed a “sports genius” in Japanese entertainment. Just last December, he earned a professional boxing license, making the accident even more heartbreaking for fans.
As the public reacts with concern, many are now calling for stricter safety standards in entertainment productions—especially those involving physically demanding or extreme activities.
