In a shocking development in the high-profile murder case of Hong Kong model Abby Choi (Cai Tianfeng), her former mother-in-law Li Rui Xiang has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for obstructing justice, according to Mirror Media.
Abby Choi was brutally murdered in February 2023, a case that sent shockwaves across Hong Kong and mainland China due to its gruesome nature. Authorities discovered that the prime suspects were members of her ex-husband’s family, including her ex-husband Alex Kwong (Guang Gang Zhi), his father, and his older brother.
Li Rui Xiang, 65, was accused of misleading police and aiding her son’s escape following the murder. During the sentencing hearing on October 28, Judge Chen Guangzhi stressed that a mother’s love cannot be used as a justification for obstructing a criminal investigation. He emphasized that her actions delayed the investigation and undermined the justice system, hence a deterrent sentence was necessary.
The court heard that after Abby Choi’s disappearance on February 21, 2023, investigators uncovered that she had been murdered and dismembered, allegedly over a financial dispute related to property. Police later found cooked human remains at a village house connected to the suspects.

Despite knowing that her son was wanted, Li Rui Xiang reportedly gave false statements to police between February 22–23, and urged him to flee. Security footage showed her encouraging him to escape, and they exchanged 127 calls during this time. The two were living together in a luxury villa in Tai Po’s Lung Mei Tsuen property owned by Abby Choi.
Although Choi divorced Kwong in 2017, the two remained in contact to co-parent their children. At court, Li Rui Xiang claimed she received 400,000–500,000 HKD monthly from Choi for child support. However, Choi’s family argued that Kwong’s family never contributed financially to the children’s upbringing.
As of now, Alex Kwong, his father, and his brother remain in custody awaiting trial on murder charges. The case continues to draw public attention for its brutality and the involvement of close family members in what appeared to be a murder-for-gain plot.
