10th-debut-anniversary MV disappointed fans
On June 25th, Red Velvet released EP “COSMIC” and the music video for the title song of the same name. To Red Velvet and their fans, this comeback is very meaningful as it marks the girl group’s 10th anniversary since their debut.

With the theme of a colorful festival, Red Velvet becomes beautiful spring fairies in “COSMIC” music video. However, behind their bright and hopeful images, the storyline of “COSMIC” actually took inspiration from the thriller “Midsommar”, which tells about a deadly festival. Knowing that even hardcore movie fans were haunted by the content with psychologically twisted scenes in “Midsommar”, the fact that Red Velvet’s music video was inspired by it sparked controversy.
Overall, this comeback once again proved Red Velvet’s signature music color and mysterious concept. However, some fans expressed disappointment in the music video and SM’s lack of care in creating content for Red Velvet. During the past 10 years of the group’s activities, Red Velvet has always gained compliments for their ability to digest any kind of concept.
Theories have become parts of Red Velvet’s comebacks and fans always wait for the group’s comeback to interpret the messages hidden behind their music videos. However, since “Chill Kill” comeback until now, Red Velvet’s core was only shown in teasers and trailers but the final MVs failed to meet fans’ expectations.
It is true that “COSMIC” is an expensive music video, but fans expect more from the story of a Red Velvet MV, instead of a “Midsommar” parody. All the emotional details representing the group’s 10-year journey were put in the EP trailer, and “COSMIC” MV was like telling a different story unrelated to Red Velvet’s special celebration.
Fans Complain About SM’s Poor Management Of Red Velvet’s Activities
Not only the comeback promotion, SM’s management of Red Velvet schedules also frustrated fans. The group has been active for 10 years and established itself as a trustworthy idol group but SM is still ignoring the potential of the members. It was the MV release delay that caused fans to explode with anger.

According to the original schedule, “COSMIC” EP and MV were supposed to be released at 6 p.m. (KST) on June 24th. However, the music video was uploaded 44 minutes late. What’s worse is that the agency only announced the delay right ahead of the schedule.
After the MV came out, Joy couldn’t help but pour her frustration. She said, “They didn’t listen to our opinion and we were just waiting. In the end, we ended up watching the MV without any edits.” The youngest member Yeri also wondered about SM’s works, especially the way they created the album cover, saying “I only want to share good feelings with fans but there are still things that made me upset…”
SM’s Center 3 once again received harsh criticism for their ignorance of fans’ complaints and lack of promotion for Red Velvet. Due to these issues, there is a high possibility that some people may not renew their contracts. In particular, Irene and Seulgi are the only members who have extended their exclusive contract with SM.
Will Red Velvet’s career end like f(x)?
What’s happening to Red Velvet makes fans worried that the girl group will become “second f(x)”. Back in 2015, f(x) made their last comeback with “4 Walls” as a group of four members. At that time, Sulli was embroiled in a series of controversies and had to suspend her activities. After “4 Walls” promotion, f(x) did not have any activities despite fans’ complaints.

f(x) hiatus continued until 2019 when the members’ contracts with SM expired. Krystal turned to acting, while leader Victoria and Amber returned to China for activities. Luna no longer carries out singing activities. From being a unique girl group in K-pop, f(x) was ruined by SM’s ignorance and unfair treatments.
Red Velvet seems to be enduring the same things as the agency doesn’t listen to the members’ opinions or take care of their promotions. This cause fans to worry about whether Red Velvet can continue being a group after this 10th debut anniversary.
