A 32-year-old Japanese woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder following her boyfriend’s death.

At around 8:05 a.m. on October 5, Asaka Mami called an ambulance, telling the operator that a man had stabbed himself in their shared hotel room. The victim is Badal Chhantyal, a 21-year-old Nepali student who attended a Japanese language school and lived in Narashino. Asaka and Chhantyal reportedly met at the warehouse where they both worked.

When paramedics arrived, the deceased victim was lying face down. He was found with a 16cm deep stab wound to his chest, made with a kitchen knife, that pierced his liver and heart. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

On October 28, police in Funabashi re-arrested Asaka, who was also previously arrested on suspicion of stealing two knives from a store on October 3. Asaka did not confess to the crime after her arrest, but she did make a chilling admission about why she stole the knives two days before Chhantyal’s murder:
I wanted to die with my boyfriend, and since I was going to die anyway, I thought I might as well steal the knives to do it. But it was a mistake.

Since news of Chhantyal’s death broke, netizens have been uploading video tributes and leaving condolences on his (@badaluu999) TikTok videos, in the comment section.

Chhantyal frequently posted about his life in Japan on TikTok, with many of his videos earning hundreds of thousands of views. In the bio of his profile, he wrote, “Stay positive no matter how negative life gets 999”.
